Sam Ehlinger Named Starting Quarterback For Season Opener

In a bit of unsurprising news this afternoon, Texas head coach Tom Herman announced that sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger will receive the bulk of the first team reps and be starter for the season opener against Maryland barring something catastrophic happening.

Ehlinger being named the starter shouldn’t come to surprise of anyone who has been paying attention since his arrival on campus. Ehlinger is a better fit for what Herman wants out of the quarterback position in his offense and his ability to make off-schedule plays gives him a leg up on junior Shane Buechele.

Both quarterbacks got significant reps with the first team offense throughout camp, even if it was close this has felt like Ehlinger’s job to lose even with Buechele having more experience at this point.
