Caden Sterns’ two-interception performance in Saturday’s win over TCU earned the Texas Longhorns’ true freshman safety Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors Monday.
The Cibolo, Texas native recorded five tackles to go with his two picks in the 31-16 victory over the Horned Frogs. Sterns become the first true freshman with two interceptions in a game for the Longhorns since DeShon Elliott in 2015.
The two forced turnovers also came at key junctures of the upset in Austin.
Sterns’ first interception came on a trick play by TCU, likely preventing a touchdown, while his second came on the first play from scrimmage after Texas had taken the lead at 17-16. He stepped in from of a telegraphed pass by TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson and nearly returned it for a touchdown – stepping out at the 2 1/2-yard line.
Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger ran it in for a touchdown on the next play.
Sterns has three interceptions through four games. The Texas record for a true freshman is four, set by Quandre Diggs in 2011 and Chris Carter in 1993.
