A lifelong Texas fan quarterbacking the Longhorns, Sam Ehlinger needs no motivational speeches this week.
Last season, he nearly led the Longhorns on a comeback that fell just short and was knocked out of the game in the process.
Ehlinger passed for 278 yards and a score and ran for 106 yards and another TD in the 29-24 loss.
He’s not expected to have to carry that much of the load Saturday when the No. 19 Longhorns square off with No. 7 Oklahoma.
Texas is 4-1, 2-0 in Big 12 play and is riding the momentum of a four-game win streak. The Sooners are 5-0, 2-0 and have won 27 of their past 28 Big 12 games.
Ehlinger, a sophomore, now has a taste of the game and the stakes for the players on the field and the fans in the venerable Cotton Bowl, which is split on the 50-yard line between crimson-clad Sooners supporters and burnt-orange-wearing Texas backers.
“I love coming out of the tunnel,” Ehlinger said. “You’re in enemy territory…you run out and you’re getting cussed at and the nets are up making sure nobody throws stuff on you and you finally break across the 50 and you’re like ‘ok I’m safe. I’m in the safe zone.’”
